A patent may be granted for appropriate subject matter that constitutes a "new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter or useful improvement thereof." PROVISIONAL PATENTS
Provisional patent applications arose out of the desire to place U.S. inventors on an even footing with foreign inventors. A foreign inventor who filed a patent application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty could secure that filing date for a later filed U.S. application for up to twelve months. Read more
DESIGN PATENTS
Design patents are not utility patents. A design patent protects the ornamental features of an article of manufacture. Design patents do NOT protect the function or utility of an article. Read more
